In tegenstelling tot andere vitaminen werkt vitamine D als een hormoon, en onze cellen hebben er een receptor voor. Bij de mens zijn de belangrijkste verbindingen in deze groep vitamine D3 (ook bekend als cholecalciferol) en vitamine D2 (ergocalciferol).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Het lichaam produceert het uit cholesterol wanneer de huid wordt blootgesteld aan zonlicht.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Het is belangrijk een gezond niveau van vitamine D te handhaven. Het speelt een belangrijke rol in de calciumhomeostase en het metabolisme. De ontdekking ervan was het gevolg van pogingen om de voedingsstof te vinden die ontbreekt bij kinderen met rachitis (de kinderlijke vorm van osteomalacie). Ook zijn er studies die aantonen dat het handhaven van voldoende hoeveelheden van deze vitamine een beschermend effect kan hebben en het risico op het ontwikkelen van multiple sclerose (MS) kan verlagen.
