Wereldaidsdag is sinds 1988 elk jaar op 1 december. Het is een internationale dag om mensen bewust te maken van de AIDS die wordt veroorzaakt door HIV-infectie en om degenen die aan de ziekte zijn overleden te herdenken. Wereldaidsdag is een van de acht offici\u00eble wereldwijde campagnes voor de volksgezondheid van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO).<\/p>\n

Het is belangrijk mensen te leren over seksuele voorlichting en het verschil tussen HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) en AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). HIV is een retrovirus dat AIDS veroorzaakt. HIV valt het immuunsysteem aan.<\/p>\n

Tijdens de ziekte neemt de virale belasting gestaag toe en verslechtert de immunodefici\u00ebntie geleidelijk (door het afnemende CD4-aantal), waardoor HIV\/AIDS zich in stadia manifesteert. De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) heeft de ziekte van HIV ingedeeld in 4 stadia:<\/p>\n

Fase I<\/strong> (ook bekend als primaire HIV-infectie): In dit stadium heeft de persoon geen enkel symptoom en is hij of zij zich er misschien niet van bewust dat hij of zij besmet is.
\nFase II<\/strong> (ook wel klinisch asymptomatisch stadium genoemd): Dit stadium kan 8-10 jaar duren zonder belangrijke symptomen, behalve gezwollen klieren (lymfeklieren), enig gewichtsverlies, mondzweren en milde huid- en nagelinfecties.
\nStadium III<\/strong> (ook bekend als symptomatische HIV-infectie): In dit stadium is het immuunsysteem aanzienlijk aangetast en de ge\u00efnfecteerde persoon begint nu veel symptomen te vertonen, zoals ernstig gewichtsverlies, chronische diarree, aanhoudende koorts, tuberculose, ernstige bacteri\u00eble infecties (bv. longontsteking en meningitis).
\nStadium IV<\/strong> (ook bekend als AIDS): Het immuunsysteem is nu ernstig beschadigd en de symptomen worden nog ernstiger. De persoon is nu ernstig verzwakt, heeft ernstige terugkerende bacteri\u00eble infecties. Ook ontwikkelt het lichaam kankers zoals Kaposi sarcoom, en andere infecties zoals Pneumocystis carinii pneumonie (PCP), toxoplasmose en HIV encefalopathie.<\/p>\n

Volgens UNAIDS <\/a>is er de afgelopen 15 jaar enorme vooruitgang geboekt in de strijd tegen aids. De resultaten hebben geleid tot een wereldwijde verbintenis om de epidemie tegen 2030 te be\u00ebindigen:<\/p>\n

Hoe HIV werkt<\/strong><\/h2>\n

HIV valt het immuunsysteem aan via speciale soorten witte bloedcellen die CD4-cellen worden genoemd. CD4-cellen spelen een belangrijke rol bij het orkestreren en controleren van de functies van het hele immuunsysteem. Als HIV eenmaal in het immuunsysteem zit, vermenigvuldigt het zich in de CD4-cellen. HIV schakelt ze in de loop van de infectie uit en doodt ze, waardoor hun normale functie wordt verstoord.<\/p>\n
