We meten succes in de wetenschap af aan het aantal gepubliceerde artikelen. Zo begint de race om ons onderzoek gedaan te krijgen.<\/p>\n<p>We begrijpen waarom het zo belangrijk is om ons onderzoek gepubliceerd te krijgen. Het is een lange weg om experimenten uit te voeren en gegevens te verzamelen - om nog maar te zwijgen van het doorlopen van revisoren en tijdschriftredacteuren. Eerst betekende een gepubliceerde krant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Een goede vraag.<\/li>\n<li>Goed opgezette experimenten<\/li>\n<li>Relevante gegevens voor de vraag<\/li>\n<li>Analyses en discussies die nieuwe gezichtspunten ten aanzien van het studieonderwerp toevoegen.<\/li>\n<li>Een bijdrage aan de wetenschap en de wereld waarin wij leven<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Je hoeft geen genie te zijn om te beseffen dat dit niet altijd gebeurt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/opinion\/prof-no-one-is-reading-you\">Volgens een studie<\/a>worden gepubliceerde artikelen door gemiddeld 10 mensen gelezen. En dat is nog niet alles. 82% van de gepubliceerde artikelen worden niet eens \u00e9\u00e9n keer geciteerd - van de artikelen die wel worden geciteerd, zijn er slechts 20% gelezen.<\/p>\n<p>Kunt u zich voorstellen dat u al die moeite doet om een artikel te publiceren en dat het door niemand anders dan de auteurs, peer reviewers en tijdschriftredacteuren wordt gelezen?<br \/>\nDat is het lot van de meeste kranten.<\/p>\n<p>Waarom meten we succes in de wetenschap dan af aan het aantal publicaties?<\/p>\n<p>Kunt u zich voorstellen dat we ons succes op een andere manier zouden meten? We zouden bijvoorbeeld een veel gemakkelijkere manier moeten hebben om onze studies uit te leggen. Onderzoekers zouden hun bevindingen niet alleen willen publiceren, maar er ook voor willen zorgen dat ze gemakkelijk te begrijpen zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Als we kijken naar de manier waarop tijdschriften communiceren, zien we dat sommige van hen hun publicatievoorschriften al aan het veranderen zijn. Tegenwoordig vragen tijdschriften om betere figuren\/plots en zelfs grafische samenvattingen.<\/p>\n<p>Misschien is het tijd om wat anders na te denken over waarom en aan wie we onze bevindingen publiceren.
