Het feit, wekte onmiddellijk bezorgdheid in de internationale medisch-wetenschappelijke gemeenschap. In China hebben de gezondheidsautoriteiten noodmaatregelen genomen om de epidemie in te dammen en zijn zij begonnen met epidemiologisch, microbiologisch en klinisch onderzoek om de nieuwe ziekte snel te karakteriseren en onder controle te krijgen. Op 7 januari 2020 kondigden Chinese wetenschappers de isolatie aan van een nieuw coronavirus uit een pati\u00ebnt in Wuhan dat aanvankelijk 2019-nCoV werd genoemd. Vervolgens ontwikkelden zij een methode van moleculaire biologie voor een snelle bevestiging van de diagnose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\" class=\"\">Het epidemiologisch onderzoek van de eerste gevallen wees op het bezoek aan een groothandel in vis en wild in Wuhan als verband, wat suggereerde dat het nieuwe coronavirus aanvankelijk via een dierlijke bron op mensen kon zijn overgedragen. Intermenselijke overdracht (van mens tot mens) werd snel bewezen en is verantwoordelijk voor de voortdurende verspreiding van de ziekte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\" class=\"\">De ziekte veroorzaakt door het nieuwe coronavirus, werd door de WHO officieel genoemd als <i>Coronavirusziekte 19<\/i>&nbsp;(afgekort COVID-19) en tegelijkertijd werd het virus omgedoopt tot SARS-CoV-2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Etiologisch agens van COVID-19<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\" class=\"\">De veroorzaker van COVID-19 is een nieuw coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Virussen van het&nbsp;<i>coronaviridae<\/i>&nbsp;familie kan infecties veroorzaken bij gewervelde dieren. Bij de mens veroorzaken coronavirussen luchtweginfecties van uiteenlopende ernst; zij zijn een van de meest voorkomende verwekkers van verkoudheid (HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43 en HCoV-NKUI) en ook erkende oorzaken van ernstige longontstekingen zoals respiratoir syndroom acute severe (SARS, voor&nbsp;<i>Ernstig Acuut Respiratoir Syndroom<\/i>, beschreven in 2002 en het Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS, voor&nbsp;<i>Middle East Respiratory Syndrome<\/i>, beschreven in 2012), respectievelijk veroorzaakt door SARS-CoV en MERS-CoV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"western\"><span class=\"\" lang=\"en-US\">Vleermuizen blijken de primaire bron (reservoir) te zijn van verschillende varianten van het coronavirus en zijn dat waarschijnlijk ook voor SARS-CoV-2, zoals wordt gesuggereerd door fylogenetische studies die momenteel worden verricht met het genoom van het nieuwe coronavirus.
