Dr. Flemming is waarschijnlijk de beroemdste wetenschapper op het gebied van de microbiologie. Hij staat bekend om de ontdekking van peniciline uit zijn kweek van micro-organismen van de schimmel Penicillium sp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De geschiedenis van zijn ontdekking is dat Fleming de eigenschappen van stafylokokken had onderzocht. Eens merkte hij dat een cultuur besmet was met een schimmel, en dat de kolonies stafylokokken onmiddellijk rondom de schimmel waren vernietigd, terwijl andere stafylokokkenkolonies verder weg normaal waren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming kweekte de schimmel in een zuivere cultuur en ontdekte dat deze een stof produceerde die een aantal ziekteverwekkende bacteri\u00ebn doodde. Hij identificeerde de schimmel als van het geslacht Penicillium, waaruit hij de stof penicilline haalde en zuiverde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hij onderzocht het positieve antibacteri\u00eble effect op vele organismen, en merkte dat het effect had op bacteri\u00ebn zoals stafylokokken en vele andere Gram-positieve ziekteverwekkers die roodvonk, longontsteking, meningitis en difterie veroorzaken, maar niet op buiktyfus of paratyfus, die worden veroorzaakt door Gram-negatieve bacteri\u00ebn, waarvoor hij destijds een geneesmiddel zocht. Hij trof ook Neisseria gonorrhoeae, die gonorroe veroorzaakt, hoewel deze bacterie Gram-negatief is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming publiceerde zijn ontdekking in 1929 in het British Journal of Experimental Pathology, maar er werd weinig aandacht besteed aan zijn artikel. Hij werd daarna beroemd omdat penicilline tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op grote schaal werd gebruikt en vele soldatenlevens redde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit was de aftrap van het terrein van de antibiotische therapie. Tegenwoordig is de horizon breder en wordt veel hoop gevestigd op het dagelijks gebruik van probiotica zoals kefir, kombusha en de modulatie van de darmmicrobiota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
