Gabriela Trevisan har doktorgrad i biologiske vitenskaper og har spesialisert seg p\u00e5 smerte og betennelsesprosesser. Forskningen hennes har som m\u00e5l \u00e5 endre m\u00e5ten vi ser p\u00e5 symptomer p\u00e5 multippel sklerose og smertestillende midler. Grunnen til at hun forsker p\u00e5 dette feltet, g\u00e5r imidlertid litt utover det vitenskapelige.<\/p>\n

Gabriela’s mother – Claudia Trevisan – suffers from multiple sclerosis. To understand better what her mother is going through, Gabriela challenge herself to study a poorly known field in science and answer the questions about Claudia’s disease.<\/p>\n

Gabriela har en hypotese om at proteinet TRPA1 kan v\u00e6re relatert til smerte ved multippel sklerose. For \u00e5 teste det, bruker Gabriela mus som ikke kan f\u00f8le smerte fordi de har et gen som er slettet for TRPA1-reseptoren.<\/p>\n

Eksperimentet hennes best\u00e5r i \u00e5 tilf\u00f8re frie radikaler til musene og se om TRPA1 aktiveres. Hvis den aktiveres, betyr det at TRPA1 er relatert til symptomer p\u00e5 multippel sklerose.<\/p>\n

If Gabriela is right, the way we treat multiple screrosis symptoms will change drastically. For instanc, the current treatment using morfine – a highly addictive drug – would be substituted by a softer drug more effective to TRPA1, such as dipirone.<\/p>\n

\"Nye<\/a><\/p>\n

Apart from the outstanding research, Gabriela’s work is the subject of the Magasinet Exame<\/a> this week. Together with six other female researchers, Gabriela won the “To Women in Science” award. L’Oreal, Unesco and the Brazilian Academia of Science awarded each of them with a 50 thousand reais – close to 16 thousand dollars – scholarship to continue their work.<\/p>\n

Gabriela p\u00e5peker at de fleste investeringene i vitenskapelige studier i Brasil kommer fra den brasilianske regjeringen.
