Hepatitis is a medical condition where the liver of an individual is inflamed due to either intoxication, viral infection. Hepatitis disease is characterized by jaundice, cirrhosis, fever, and enlargement of the liver. Amongst the infective agents responsible for hepatitis, Hepatitis A virus is transmitted through contaminated water whereas B and C are found to be transmitted through blood and bodily fluids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hvordan ble det oppdaget?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the discovery of Hepatitis B, Alter and his team had observed several unexplained liver infections and chronic hepatitis after blood transfusion. In their subsequent studies, they proved two major facts one, the unknown infectious agent could transmit the disease to chimpanzee and second, the infectious agent had a characteristic of a virus but not like Hepatitis A or B. Alter\u2019s contribution to the field of virology served as light in the dark stormy night of liver infection cases. Yet, the virus was not identified and not characterized by any family of viruses and not classified.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bidrag til identifisering og vei til utryddelse<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With high morbidity and mortality rates, over the years researchers were keen to identify the causative agent of \u201cunknown\u201d hepatitis like virus and characterize it. After trying all traditional techniques and failing, with the innovative approach of Houghton at Chiron pharmaceuticals, they could identify and clone DNA fragments responsible for viral protein formation. After elaborate DNA library preparation and search of the clone, finally, Houghton and his team could identify the similarity with the Flaviviridae family and named it the Hepatitis C virus. Their research also gave a test procedure to identify the causative agent with antibodies that were identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11796 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/liver-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Det endelige beviset p\u00e5 at hepatitt C kunne v\u00e6re det eneste ansvarlige agens for leverinfeksjon, var et resultat av omfattende forskning utf\u00f8rt av Rice ved Washington University i St. Ved hjelp av rekombinant DNA-teknologi genererte Rice og teamet hans en genomisk variant av hepatitt C-viruset som ikke hadde inaktiverende sekvenser, og injiserte den i primater. Resultatene viste at variantene kunne f\u00f8re til kronisk leversykdom og gjenspeilte alle patologiske forandringer. Med alle de nyidentifiserte sekvensene og inaktiverende regionene ga de h\u00e5p om \u00e5 skape det rette terapeutiske middelet mot hepatitt C-viruset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Virkningen av oppdagelsen<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verden har blitt en krigsfront med covid-19-pandemien. Med oppdagelsen av antivirale legemidler, diagnostikk og identifisering er hepatitt C og relaterte prestasjoner bemerkelsesverdige fremskritt innen virologi og medisin. Verdens helseorganisasjon har satt seg som m\u00e5l \u00e5 utrydde hepatitt C-viruset innen ti \u00e5r. Disse oppdagelsene er et skritt p\u00e5 veien mot dette m\u00e5let.
