Dette er et vanskelig sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5l, selv for fysikerne. Det er fortsatt mange mysterier \u00e5 l\u00f8se p\u00e5 planeten v\u00e5r og i solsystemet. Avstandene i verdensrommet er s\u00e5 store at vanlige meter og kilometer ikke strekker til. Astronomene bruker et mye st\u00f8rre m\u00e5l, kalt den astronomiske enheten. Dette er den gjennomsnittlige avstanden fra jorden til solen, eller omtrent 150 millioner kilometer. Merkur er bare 0,39 astronomiske enheter fra solen, mens Jupiter g\u00e5r i bane i en avstand p\u00e5 5,5 astronomiske enheter. Og Pluto befinner seg helt der ute, 39,2 astronomiske enheter. Carbon dioxide is an important gas of the greenhouse effect. Pluto var det f\u00f8rste objektet i Kuiperbeltet som ble oppdaget, og den er den st\u00f8rste kjente plutoiden (eller&nbsp;<i>isdverg<\/i>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuiperbeltet <sup>1<\/sup>  er en oml\u00f8psskive i det ytre solsystemet, som strekker seg fra Neptuns bane.  Det ligner p\u00e5 asteroidebeltet, men er langt st\u00f8rre.  I likhet med asteroidebeltet best\u00e5r det hovedsakelig av sm\u00e5 legemer eller rester fra da solsystemet ble dannet. Mens mange asteroider hovedsakelig best\u00e5r av stein og metall, best\u00e5r de fleste objektene i Kuiperbeltet i stor grad av frosne, flyktige stoffer (kalt \"is\"), som metan, ammoniakk og vann. Kuiperbeltet er hjemsted for tre offisielt anerkjente dvergplaneter: Pluto, Haumea og Makemake.
