Le distanze nello spazio sono cos\u00ec vaste che i normali metri e chilometri non bastano. Gli astronomi usano una misura molto pi\u00f9 grande, chiamata unit\u00e0 astronomica. Si tratta della distanza media tra la Terra e il Sole, pari a circa 150 milioni di chilometri. Mercurio dista solo 0,39 unit\u00e0 astronomiche dal Sole, mentre Giove orbita a una distanza di 5,5 unit\u00e0 astronomiche. L'anidride carbonica \u00e8 un gas importante per l'effetto serra. Normalmente, il sole riscalda la superficie del pianeta durante il giorno, ma durante la notte il pianeta si raffredda rilasciando la radiazione infrarossa (calore) nello spazio. Come la fascia degli asteroidi, \u00e8 costituita principalmente da piccoli corpi o da resti della formazione del Sistema solare. Mentre molti asteroidi sono composti principalmente da roccia e metallo, la maggior parte degli oggetti della fascia di Kuiper \u00e8 composta in gran parte da volatili congelati (chiamati \"ghiacci\"), come metano, ammoniaca e acqua. La fascia di Kuiper ospita tre pianeti nani ufficialmente riconosciuti: Plutone, Haumea e Makemake.
