Normalement, le cycle du carbone de la Terre maintient un \u00e9quilibre naturel du carbone dans l'atmosph\u00e8re, les terres et les oc\u00e9ans gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la \"respiration de la plan\u00e8te\". Cependant, les activit\u00e9s humaines, telles que l'\u00e9mission de combustibles fossiles, rompent l'\u00e9quilibre du cycle du carbone et provoquent des changements climatiques, comme l'augmentation de l'effet de serre et l'acidification des oc\u00e9ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainsi, pour comprendre les cons\u00e9quences de l'acidification des oc\u00e9ans, il faut d'abord r\u00e9capituler le cycle du carbone. J'ai \u00e9crit \u00e0 ce sujet ici<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'effet de serre permet la vie sur Terre, en pi\u00e9geant la chaleur dans l'atmosph\u00e8re, r\u00e9chauffant ainsi la plan\u00e8te. J'ai montr\u00e9 comment cela fonctionne ici<sup>1<\/sup>. Cependant, malgr\u00e9 son importance, l'augmentation du dioxyde de carbone en a fait un probl\u00e8me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais tout l'exc\u00e8s de dioxyde de carbone ne reste pas dans l'atmosph\u00e8re. Les scientifiques estiment que les oc\u00e9ans ont absorb\u00e9 un tiers de l'ensemble du dioxyde de carbone produit par les activit\u00e9s humaines. L'\u00e9limination du dioxyde de carbone de l'atmosph\u00e8re par les oc\u00e9ans contribue \u00e0 retarder l'ampleur du changement climatique. L'acide carbonique se dissout rapidement pour former des ions H+ (un acide) et du bicarbonate, HCO3- (une base). L'eau de mer est naturellement satur\u00e9e d'une autre base, l'ion carbonate (CO3-2) qui agit comme un antiacide pour neutraliser les H+, formant davantage de bicarbonate. En fait, l'oc\u00e9an est devenu pr\u00e8s de 30 % plus acide qu'il ne l'\u00e9tait au d\u00e9but de l'\u00e8re industrielle. En outre, les ions carbonate deviennent moins abondants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certains des ions hydrog\u00e8ne suppl\u00e9mentaires r\u00e9agissent avec les ions carbonate pour former davantage de bicarbonate. Lorsque le carbonate devient moins abondant, ces organismes, tels que les coraux et les palourdes, ont plus de difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 construire et \u00e0 maintenir leurs coquilles et leurs squelettes. L'augmentation de l'acidit\u00e9 peut m\u00eame provoquer la dissolution de certaines coquilles et squelettes de carbonate. Malgr\u00e9 leur petite taille, les pt\u00e9ropodes constituent une importante source de nourriture pour de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces, dont les poissons, les phoques et les baleines. Mais les pt\u00e9ropodes ont une coquille d\u00e9licate en carbonate de calcium qui est vuln\u00e9rable \u00e0 l'acidification des oc\u00e9ans. Dans une s\u00e9rie d'exp\u00e9riences, des coquilles de pt\u00e9ropodes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 plac\u00e9es dans de l'eau de mer au pH (acidit\u00e9) pr\u00e9vu pour l'oc\u00e9an Austral d'ici 2100.
