Selon les Acad\u00e9mies nationales, \"<em>Au cours de millions d'ann\u00e9es, le dioxyde de carbone pr\u00e9sent dans l'air se combine \u00e0 l'eau de pluie pour former des acides faibles qui dissolvent tr\u00e8s lentement les roches.<\/em> Les rivi\u00e8res et les cours d'eau transportent ces min\u00e9raux jusqu'aux oc\u00e9ans o\u00f9 ils sont utilis\u00e9s par les animaux pour former des r\u00e9cifs coralliens et des coquillages et contribuer \u00e0 \u00e9quilibrer le pH de l'oc\u00e9an. Sur des p\u00e9riodes encore plus longues, le carbone organique (form\u00e9 \u00e0 partir des restes de la vie marine) est stock\u00e9 dans les profondeurs de la cro\u00fbte terrestre et forme des combustibles fossiles, comme le p\u00e9trole et le gaz naturel. Une partie de ce carbone sera lib\u00e9r\u00e9e dans l'atmosph\u00e8re par les volcans, compl\u00e9tant ainsi le cycle.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les activit\u00e9s humaines, telles que l'\u00e9mission de combustibles fossiles et les processus industriels, augmentent la quantit\u00e9 de CO2 dans l'atmosph\u00e8re.
