Lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt happamuus voi jopa aiheuttaa joidenkin karbonaattikuorien ja -runkojen liukenemisen. Pienest\u00e4 koostaan huolimatta pteropodit ovat t\u00e4rke\u00e4 ravinnonl\u00e4hde monille lajeille, kuten kaloille, hylkeille ja valaille. Pteropodeilla on kuitenkin herk\u00e4t kalsiumkarbonaattikuoret, jotka ovat alttiita meren happamoitumiselle.
