El D\u00eda Mundial del Sida, se celebra cada a\u00f1o el 1 de diciembre desde 1988. Es un d\u00eda internacional para concienciar sobre el sida causado por la infecci\u00f3n del VIH y para recordar a los que han muerto a causa de la enfermedad. El D\u00eda Mundial del Sida es una de las ocho campa\u00f1as oficiales de salud p\u00fablica a nivel mundial marcadas por la Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud (OMS).<\/p>\n

Es importante ense\u00f1ar a la gente la educaci\u00f3n sexual y la diferencia entre el VIH (virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana) y el sida (s\u00edndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida). El VIH es un retrovirus que causa el SIDA. El VIH ataca el sistema inmunitario.<\/p>\n

A lo largo de la enfermedad, la carga viral aumenta constantemente y la inmunodeficiencia empeora progresivamente (debido a la disminuci\u00f3n del recuento de CD4), lo que hace que el VIH\/SIDA se manifieste por etapas. La Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud (OMS) ha clasificado la enfermedad del VIH en 4 etapas:<\/p>\n

Fase I<\/strong> (tambi\u00e9n conocida como infecci\u00f3n primaria por el VIH): En esta fase, la persona no presenta ning\u00fan s\u00edntoma y puede no ser consciente de que est\u00e1 infectada.
\nFase II<\/strong> (tambi\u00e9n conocida como etapa cl\u00ednicamente asintom\u00e1tica): Esta etapa puede durar entre 8 y 10 a\u00f1os sin mayores s\u00edntomas, salvo la inflamaci\u00f3n de los ganglios (n\u00f3dulos linf\u00e1ticos), cierta p\u00e9rdida de peso, ulceraci\u00f3n de la boca e infecciones leves de la piel y las u\u00f1as.
\nFase III<\/strong> (tambi\u00e9n conocida como infecci\u00f3n sintom\u00e1tica por VIH): En esta fase, el sistema inmunitario est\u00e1 muy afectado y la persona infectada empieza a manifestar muchos s\u00edntomas, como p\u00e9rdida de peso grave, diarrea cr\u00f3nica, fiebre persistente, tuberculosis, infecciones bacterianas graves (por ejemplo, neumon\u00eda y meningitis).
\nFase IV<\/strong> (tambi\u00e9n conocido como SIDA): El sistema inmunitario est\u00e1 ahora gravemente da\u00f1ado y los s\u00edntomas se agravan. La persona est\u00e1 ahora gravemente agotada, tiene graves infecciones bacterianas recurrentes. Adem\u00e1s, el cuerpo desarrolla c\u00e1nceres como el sarcoma de Kaposi, y otras infecciones como la neumon\u00eda por Pneumocystis carinii (PCP), la toxoplasmosis y la encefalopat\u00eda por VIH.<\/p>\n

C\u00f3mo funciona el VIH<\/strong><\/h2>\n

El VIH ataca al sistema inmunitario a trav\u00e9s de unos tipos especiales de gl\u00f3bulos blancos conocidos como c\u00e9lulas CD4. Las c\u00e9lulas CD4 desempe\u00f1an un papel importante en la orquestaci\u00f3n y el control de las funciones de todo el sistema inmunitario. Una vez que el VIH est\u00e1 en el sistema inmunitario, se multiplica dentro de las c\u00e9lulas CD4. El VIH las inutiliza y las mata en el curso de la infecci\u00f3n, interfiriendo as\u00ed en su funci\u00f3n normal.<\/p>\n
