Fleming hizo crecer el moho en un cultivo puro y descubri\u00f3 que produc\u00eda una sustancia que mataba varias bacterias causantes de enfermedades. Identific\u00f3 el moho como del g\u00e9nero Penicillium, del que extrajo y purific\u00f3 la sustancia Penicilina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investig\u00f3 su efecto antibacteriano positivo en muchos organismos, y observ\u00f3 que afectaba a bacterias como los estafilococos y muchos otros pat\u00f3genos Gram-positivos que causan la escarlatina, la neumon\u00eda, la meningitis y la difteria, pero no a la fiebre tifoidea ni a la paratifoidea, causadas por bacterias Gram-negativas, para las que se buscaba entonces una cura. Tambi\u00e9n afect\u00f3 a la Neisseria gonorrhoeae, causante de la gonorrea, aunque esta bacteria es Gram-negativa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming public\u00f3 su descubrimiento en 1929, en el British Journal of Experimental Pathology, pero se prest\u00f3 poca atenci\u00f3n a su art\u00edculo. Despu\u00e9s se hizo famoso porque la penicilina se utiliz\u00f3 en gran medida durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y salv\u00f3 la vida de muchos soldados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
