Den spiller en vigtig rolle i drivhuseffekten sammen med andre gasser som metan. Drivhuseffekten g\u00f8r det muligt for livet p\u00e5 jorden at fange varmen.  Normalt opretholder jordens kulstofkredsl\u00f8b en naturlig balance mellem kulstof i atmosf\u00e6ren, landjorden og havet gennem \"planetens \u00e5ndedr\u00e6t\". Men menneskelige aktiviteter som udledning af fossile br\u00e6ndstoffer bryder balancen i kulstofkredsl\u00f8bet og for\u00e5rsager klimaforandringer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/science_figures\">Lav effektive videnskabsfigurer p\u00e5 f\u00e5 minutter<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>S\u00e5dan fungerer kulstofkredsl\u00f8bet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Havene spiller en vigtig rolle i kulstofkredsl\u00f8bet. Gasudvekslingen giver en balance mellem atmosf\u00e6ren og havene. I mellemtiden fanger alger og andre autotrofe organismer kuldioxid og leverer ilt gennem fotosyntese. Disse processer kombineret med dyrs respiration og menneskelige aktiviteter er en del af den kortsigtede cyklus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men der er ogs\u00e5 en langsigtet cyklus, som foreg\u00e5r over l\u00e6ngere tidsperioder. If\u00f8lge de nationale akademier, \"<em>I l\u00f8bet af millioner af \u00e5r bliver luftens kuldioxid kombineret med regnvand til svage syrer, der meget langsomt opl\u00f8ser klipper.<\/em> Floder og vandl\u00f8b f\u00f8rer disse mineraler til havene, hvor de bruges af dyr til at danne koralrev og skaller og hj\u00e6lper med at balancere havets pH-v\u00e6rdi. Over endnu l\u00e6ngere tid bliver organisk kulstof (dannet af resterne af livet i havet) lagret dybt nede i jordskorpen og danner fossile br\u00e6ndstoffer, s\u00e5som olie og naturgas. Noget af dette kulstof vil blive frigivet tilbage i atmosf\u00e6ren af vulkaner og fuldende cyklussen.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Menneskelige aktiviteter som udledning af fossile br\u00e6ndstoffer og industrielle processer \u00f8ger m\u00e6ngden af CO2 i atmosf\u00e6ren. Som f\u00f8lge heraf absorberer havet mere og mere kuldioxid. Disse data stammer fra analyser foretaget af NASA<sup>1<\/sup>. De globale temperaturer i 2018 var 1,5 grader Fahrenheit (0,83 grader Celsius) varmere end gennemsnittet fra 1951 til 1980, if\u00f8lge forskere fra NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) i New York. Globalt set ligger temperaturerne i 2018 efter dem i 2016, 2017 og 2015.
