Mennesker med skizofreni kan virke, som om de har mistet kontakten med virkeligheden. For at forst\u00e5 udviklingen af skizofreni er vi n\u00f8dt til at tale om synaptisk besk\u00e6ring. De udg\u00f8r 10-15% af alle de celler, der findes i hjernen. Som de residente makrofagceller fungerer de som den f\u00f8rste og vigtigste form for aktivt immunforsvar i centralnervesystemet (CNS).
