Hepatitis er en medicinsk tilstand, hvor leveren hos en person er bet\u00e6ndt p\u00e5 grund af enten forgiftning eller virusinfektion. I deres efterf\u00f8lgende studier beviste de to vigtige fakta: For det f\u00f8rste kunne det ukendte smitstof overf\u00f8re sygdommen til chimpanser, og for det andet havde smitstoffet karakteristika som en virus, men ikke som hepatitis A eller B. Alters bidrag til virologien tjente som lys i den m\u00f8rke stormfulde nat med tilf\u00e6lde af leverinfektioner. Efter at have fors\u00f8gt alle traditionelle teknikker uden held, kunne de med Houghtons innovative tilgang hos Chiron Pharmaceuticals identificere og klone DNA-fragmenter, der var ansvarlige for dannelsen af virale proteiner.
