Dr. Flemming er nok den mest ber\u00f8mte forsker inden for mikrobiologi. Han er kendt for opdagelsen af penicilin ud fra sin kultur af mikroorganismer fra svampen Penicillium sp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historien om hans opdagelse er, at Fleming havde unders\u00f8gt stafylokokkernes egenskaber. Engang bem\u00e6rkede han, at en kultur var forurenet med en svamp, og at kolonierne af stafylokokker umiddelbart omkring svampen var blevet \u00f8delagt, mens andre stafylokok-kolonier l\u00e6ngere v\u00e6k var normale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming dyrkede skimmelsvampen i en renkultur og fandt ud af, at den producerede et stof, der dr\u00e6bte en r\u00e6kke sygdomsfremkaldende bakterier. Han identificerede skimmelsvampen som v\u00e6rende af sl\u00e6gten Penicillium, hvorfra han udvandt og oprensede stoffet Penicilllin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Han unders\u00f8gte dens positive antibakterielle virkning p\u00e5 mange organismer og bem\u00e6rkede, at den p\u00e5virkede bakterier som stafylokokker og mange andre Gram-positive patogener, der for\u00e5rsager skarlagensfeber, lungebet\u00e6ndelse, meningitis og difteri, men ikke tyfus eller paratyfus, som er for\u00e5rsaget af Gram-negative bakterier, som han s\u00f8gte en kur mod p\u00e5 det tidspunkt. Det p\u00e5virkede ogs\u00e5 Neisseria gonorrhoeae, som for\u00e5rsager gonorr\u00e9, selvom denne bakterie er Gram-negativ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming offentliggjorde sin opdagelse i 1929 i British Journal of Experimental Pathology, men der var ikke megen opm\u00e6rksomhed omkring hans artikel.
